Sponsoring budding green professionals: corporate social responsibility to the next generation

Rigel’s principal conviction has always revolved around environmental sustainability and protection. We believe that we have a responsibility to future generations and that it is necessary to leave behind a liveable planet with clean reservoirs of resources for posterity.

Rigel believes the young are our hope for the future. We have been actively sponsoring various educational institutions – tertiary and younger – with the intention of grooming talented green professionals who can enhance environmental sustainability in Singapore, the region and the world. Now, more than ever, filling this knowledge gap has become a pressing issue, following a statement released by Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA) pointing to an increasingly high demand for professionals trained in the dynamics of green buildings as Singapore aims to green 80% of all her buildings by year 2030 and the worldwide demand to mitigate climate change heats up. Rigel incessantly strives to set a good corporate role model in the conservation of valuable natural resources, as well as providing our next generation with a solid education grounded in the fundamentals of environmental sustainability, so that they can be empowered to continue this eco-loving legacy for the benefit of Mother Nature and humanity.

Illustrating our unconditional contribution towards the progress of a green economy, Rigel does not require the recipients of the scholarship programme that we sponsor to serve a bond with us after their education. This programme is for the field of Design and Architectural Engineering, for the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). A sponsorship of S$100,000 per year for the next five to ten years will be provided for financially underprivileged but talented young minds to further their professional development in life and to equip them with cutting-edge know-how and skills to become green building/restroom specialists to help realise our dream and vision for a more sustainable future and a greener environment.

In another approach to show our support in the academic realm, Rigel has also sponsored S$5,000 to Victoria School through our business partner, Soilbuild Group Holdings Ltd. Being a member of the Old Victorians Association (OVA), Soilbuild’s Managing Director, Mr Lim Chap Huat, has organised a charity fund-raising programme in collaboration with Peach Garden Chinese Restaurant in the selling of Peach Garden vouchers. With every S$1 raised in the purchase of these vouchers, 30% has been donated to Victoria School’s GPS Fund (which the OVA is helping to manage). GPS refers to the school’s vision of grooming every student with the qualities and character of a Gentleman, a Professional and a Sportsman. In view of the school’s 135 years of history, it has set up the GPS fund to aid its budding talents so that no one will be deprived of any opportunities for a well-rounded learning experience within and beyond the classroom, and Rigel is glad to have played a part to groom the next generation of professionals for a more holistic and sustainable economy of the future.
